The suits from TEN Sport and ONE HD file into a meeting room to choose a song to accompany the 33 television ads that they plan to broadcast in the lead-up to their Commonwealth Games coverage. The suits are told that there is a shortlist of three songs that they'll be asked to choose from. The network's creative director Rob Rosenberg brings the meeting to order and announces: "Ladies and gentlemen, the first song that you'll hear is by U2." The suits listen intently, jotting down notes, and exchanging first impressions. "The next song you'll hear is by Coldplay." Again, more intense listening. Lots of nodding. "And the final song that you'll hear is by After the Fall." "After the what?" Now, Coasting can't say for sure that the meeting played out exactly like that. But we do know for a fact that the Central Coast band edged out U2 and Coldplay to get its song on the TV. "We were absolutely rapt," After the Fall singer Ben Windsor told me. The ads are on high rotation as the countdown to the Commonwealth Games continues, and that means that After the Fall's song, Desire, is being heard by more people, more often, than Windsor could have ever imagined when he sat down late one Saturday night to write the tune. You'll enjoy the band's success story. It's a genuine victory for the little Aussie battler. And our cover story this month is on local professional surfer Rebecca Woods and her extraordinary surfing safari in Indonesia. Dive in!
