How to play it smart, but... 1. Location Having your ceremony and reception at the same venue (or at least nearby) makes sense. You're sure to save money, and you'll get more time to spend with your wedding guests. The Central Coast is blessed with plenty of venues to make that happen. Exchange vows on a picturesque fairway at a local golf club -- such as Shelly Beach, Magenta Shores, or Kooindah Waters -- then simply stroll into the club for the reception. Or what about a beach wedding followed by a reception inside a surf club, or at Ettalong Beach Club, where the couple can book a room for their wedding night accommodation? 2. Wedding planners Consider hiring a wedding planner. Their knowledge of the local wedding industry service providers and suppliers can save money and time. 3. Wed on a weekday Fridays are becoming increasingly popular because you can save money with suppliers. Guests need only to have a half-day off work so, with enough notice, having a weekday wedding won't cause as much trouble as you might think. 4. Table service Consider having table service rather than a buffet, if you are having a sit-down meal at your wedding reception. Controlling food quantities is harder with a buffet. 5. Lunchtime reception Some couples shy away from a lunchtime reception because it doesn't seem as formal as a dinner reception. But the bride can still wear couture, and the setting can be just as beautiful as in the evening. Styling a lunch reception is also less expensive because you don't need lighting. It's a good option because a lunch menu is always cheaper than a dinner menu. 6. The guest list Keep your guest list under control. This can be a delicate matter. Think about limiting the guest list to immediate family and friends. 7. In-season flowers Choosing in-season flowers is a good money saver. Brides can spend anywhere from $50 to $300 per bouquet, so it's a good area to target. You'll avoid importing costs if you choose flowers that are in season. And they'll look and smell better, too. Also consider scattering rose petals across table tops for a gorgeous way of decorating your reception. 8. Transport Hiring a limousine can cost the earth, especially when they know it's for a wedding, so consider hiring an upmarket car in a colour other than white, or even ask around to see if anyone has a classic they don't mind parting with for the day. 9. Variations on a theme Consider having a themed wedding. Some can be expensive, but others, such as a 'casual Aussie wedding' can include a traditional backyard barbecue where you serve Aussie favourites such as lamb and snags. Dress for the theme, too, to save on the cost of wedding gowns and suits. 10. Invitations Buy pre-designed invitations and stationery. This will save time and money and you can always tweak the pre-designed invitations if they look a little too standard for your liking. For instance, use candle wax or an embossed initial print to add your own special touch. SMART PLAY: Have your wedding ceremony at a venue such as the picturesque Shelly Beach Golf Club, then simply stroll inside the club for the reception.
