Don't assume that because you've been brushing your teeth for most of your life that you pretty much know all that there is to know about dental health. For instance, you know that you're supposed to brush your teeth after meals, right? Think again. "The old advice to brush after meals is wrong," Dr Tony Collins, of Gorokan Dental Cosmetic and Implant Centre, said. "Brushing after meals can contribute to significant erosion and abrasion problems. "If you like eating with clean cutlery and clean plates, then enjoy eating with clean teeth." So the new edict is to brush your teeth before eating. "Your food was clean and pure, so you only need to rinse your mouth with water after eating, and especially after sweet foods." The theme of this year's Dental Health Week is tooth erosion. And that places the focus squarely on acids. "Tooth erosion is the loss of tooth structure through the actions of acids on the tooth surface," Dr Collins said. "Both enamel (the hard, outer layer of teeth) and dentine (the bone-like under layer) can be affected." BIGHT STUFF: Establish good oral hygiene habits early in life. Picture by Domino Postiglione.
