But most importantly, they're effective. In this first of a series of articles, sports science student Joel Henry of Lake Haven Recreation Centre, at Gorokan, will demonstrate how to get the most benefit from a Swiss ball. The key benefit to be gained from exercising with the ball is core strength and stability. "No matter what kind of sport you're involved in, core strength and stability is vital," Joel said. The Swiss ball is excellent at "switching on" these abdominal and back muscles, he said. Because of the instability of the ball, the body is forced to engage these important muscles to maintain balance. ...Leg curls 1 Start by laying flat on the ground with your heels resting on the ball. 2 Switch on your core muscles by placing your hands flat on the floor and raising your body as shown. 4 Return to the starting position.
