But nothing gives Brian a bigger buzz than to see young locals taking their first steps to the industry. Three years ago, Brian launched Student Showcase evenings at Lizotte s, giving teenagers from the region s high schools a real-world stage to perform on. "It s about the kids, and supporting the local music industry, and it s something that we re very proud of," Brian said. Among the schools taking part are Terrigal, Gosford, Kincumber and Narara Valley high schools, and Green Point Christian College, Central Coast Grammar School, Brisbane Water Secondary College and Central Coast Adventist School. On each Student Showcase night, students from a school s years 10, 11 and 12 get to perform on the stage that has played host to stars such as Jimmy Barnes, Diesel, Jon Stevens, Renee Geyer and Kasey Chambers. "It gives the kids a chance to perform on a living, breathing stage rather than just in a school hall," Brian said. "And I get just as big a kick out of putting these kids on the stage as I do the big names." Student performances range from classical instrumental pieces to small rock bands. Often the performances are linked to the student s HSC music studies. "Erina High School recently had a night here and they set it up as a mock exam situation where the kids were actually given a mark by their teachers," Brian said. And because the audiences comprise mostly family and friends of the young performers, the atmosphere is very supportive. "The families are really overwhelmed, and the atmosphere is electric," Brian said. Lizotte s charges a minimum admission fee on the nights so that the students can raise some money for their schools. Importantly, the Student Showcase nights are providing students with a real life career path. "The talent is pretty impressive, so some of the kids from the Student Showcase nights end up rolling into our Live and Local shows on Wednesday nights," Brian said. And from there, the students have the chance to earn invitations to play support for some of the major acts at the venue. Some even headline their own shows. "It s something for their resumes," Brian said of playing at Lizotte s. "We like to think that it s a pretty good leg up for these kids in the industry." Among the former Student Showcase performers who have gone on to perform at Live and Local nights, to play support for major acts, or even headline their own shows are Daniel Lee Kendall, Chris Koelma, Anabelle Kay, Kim Harlow and Jesse Schadel.
