20 central coast • new south wales COASTING FEATURE THE Australian Air League boasts three squadrons in the Central Coast wing. You could say it’s an organisation that has really taken off. (Sorry about that...) So, what is the Australian Air League (AAL), exactly? Take the outdoor and adventure elements of, say, the Scouts, and blend it with a primary school for aviation, and you’ll start to get the picture. Drill officer with the Central Coast wing, Brendan Gregory, 24, said the AAL was a youth organisation for boys and girls which encouraged an interest in aviation as a career or as a hobby. “ Fundamentally, it’s about learning how to fly an aircraft, as well as learning the theory of flight,” Brendan said. Local squadrons at Toukley, Gosford (both for boys) and Doyalson (for girls) cater for children from as young as eight, through to 18-year-olds. Squadrons meet one night a week where the young cadets take part in classes on subjects HANDS-ON: Cadet Rhys Gosper (left) and officer Greg Schilf, at Warnervale Airport during a recent Friday night meeting of the Toukley squadron.
