6 central coast • new south wales INSIGHT: Andrew Farriss of INXS had participants spellbound last year with his presentation on writing for the rock genre. Picture by Aaron Brown. LEAD singer for Central Coast rock band October Rage, Nick Roberts, describes the Australian Songwriters Conference as a hot house of "mind opening" ideas. "You get very little sleep," Roberts said of the intense four-day itinerary of tuition, workshops and networking. "But it's very much worth it." Roberts attended the first two conferences in 2008 and 2009, and he's coming back for more when the third annual Australian Songwriters Conference is staged at Ettalong Beach Tourist Resort at the June long weekend. The conference attracts musicians and songwriters of all genres and levels of experience. Egos are handed in at reception, and participants enjoy four days of learning, nurturing and peer support. Last year's conference included sessions on a diverse range of subjects including crafting lyrics, how to make a demo and work with a producer, writing melodies that people won't forget, music law, successful song structures and rhymes, and even placing songs in movies and TV. Keynote speakers include industry veterans and experts in the field of songwriting, music publishing, composing and engineering. "As well as the presentations from the key speakers there's also a lot of time spent between sessions for networking and getting to meet all of the successful writers and publishers," Roberts said. "You get to know the industry a lot better, and that's what gives you a better chance in the game." Participants come away with contacts as well as the practical knowledge they need to improve, he said. "My band has had a lot of success as a result of me going [to the conference]. What we've learned has helped us heaps." By DAVID STEWART COASTING MUSIC CONVERTED: Local Nick Roberts is lining up for his third Australian Songwriters Conference this year. Picture by Aaron Brown.
