Prospective members need not feel that they should be experts, or experienced four-wheel- drivers, to join the club. "Our members are always learning," Brian said. "No-one in the club professes to be an expert on everything. But we can teach you as much as you want to know." And new members need not fear having their vehicles subjected to torture. "We need our cars for Monday!" Brian said. The club provides three levels of driver training. This covers everything from basic vehicle knowledge and club guidelines, to more complex driving skills and safety procedures. Club members also pick up valuable lessons informally on club trips, simply by watching other members of the touring party. Among the skills that club members can learn are: • Advanced four-wheel-driving techniques; • 4WD recovery; • Map reading; • GPS (global positioning system) usage; • Bush mechanics (how to repair a vehicle on the run); and • UHF radio usage. Girls leading the way Central Coast Four Wheel Drive Club is no blokes' club. "In fact, we have some single women in the club who give the guys what for!" Wendy said. "It doesn't matter whether you wear trousers or a skirt." Wendy's daughter, Lisa, said the club provided a very supportive atmosphere for women of all ages. "We even have a training unit especially for women. It's led by a female club member and there are no husbands, fathers or boyfriends allowed during the training," Lisa said. She's looking forward to driving to central Australia with the club in July. "There are some great places that I can now go to as part of this group that I would never go to alone," she said. We've got a convoy Club members are welcome to join a variety of trips throughout the year. Each trip is led by a club volunteer. The leader's role often involves planning the route and points of interest, as well as the camp site. Trips range from one-day and weekend tours to much longer journeys. Among the one-day and weekend destinations visited by the club are: • Stockton Beach (driving on the sand hills is great practice for desert treks); • Newnes (near Lithgow); • The club's property near Dungog; and • The Watagan Mountains (where trails range from 'easy' to 'aggressive'). Among the Big Ticket trips for the club this year are to: • the Victorian high country; • Alice Springs; and • the Birdsville Track. FEMALE-FRIENDLY: These days Lisa Williams drives a Toyota Prado, but when she started in the club she drove a little Suzuki which she said "went where no Suzuki was meant to go". BROWN LAND: The photo albums of club members feature plenty of treasures from the Australian outback, including images from Glen Innes and the Victorian high country.
