Product photos from the market Occupation: Swimming instructor. Name: Jessica Foott. Age: 23. Suburb: Wamberal. What does the occupation involve? I teach in the water four times a week at FBI Swim and Fitness Centre, Forresters Beach [4384 3577], with children from nine months old (in my mums and bubs classes) to 12-year-olds. What first attracted you to the job? I've grown up always being a squad swimmer and loving the water, so when I turned 16 and was old enough I was eager to get in the water and teach. What training/preparation is required? You have to attain your Austswim certificate, which is a two-day theory/practical course and then an exam. You then need to do about 20 training hours in the pool. Best part of the gig? Knowing that you are teaching students a life skill which is so important, especially living around the coast. It's also always so rewarding when you see children enjoying themselves, smiling and having fun reaching their swimming goals. Worst part of the gig? I really believe it's the best job I've ever had so I can't really say anything bad about it. Most interesting day on the job? Every day is interesting and two days are never the same. What salary can a new-starter expect in this job? Each swim school is different but the starting rate is around $17 per hour. What do you hope to be doing for work in 10 years? I will have finished my primary teaching degree at uni and will be working as a school teacher on the Central Coast. I also hope to have my own swim school.
