After all, you can now buy every stomach- crunching, core-strengthening, bike-pedalling, weight-lifting and muscle-lengthening device known to man. And with just a few easy payments, and some postage and handling, you can have them in your home, to use when you choose. Exercise and sport science lecturer Dr Xanne Janse de Jonge, of the University of Newcastle's Ourimbah Campus, agrees that some exercise is better than none. But when it comes to getting safe, effective and lasting results from exercise, joining a gym is still often the best way to go, she said. And here's why... Staff "Gyms have qualified staff that can help and motivate you," Dr Janse de Jonge said. Equipment The exercise equipment in gyms is better than anything you can bring home. "The specialised and commercial equipment in gyms is generally not the sort of equipment you could just bring home and put in your garage," she said. Safety The equipment in gyms is generally a lot more advanced, better maintained and often safer than pieces typically found in home gyms. Variety "The variety of equipment at gyms will help you to get fit, and most equipment gets replaced regularly keeping up to date with the latest developments," she said. Having, say, a bench press at home in your garage will assist with building upper-body strength, but what about the rest of your body? Atmosphere Most people find the lively atmosphere at gyms to be energising. People also look forward to socialising at the gym. Motivation Joining a gym with a friend, or group of friends, can help to boost your motivation to exercise. And being in an environment where other people are exercising, and where gym staff are offering you encouragement, can make all the difference.
