THERE'S a guitar riff in his song California that takes Mark Cashin to another place. "It's the ambience," he says, "I can just imagine being in a stadium and people hearing that and moving to it..." The song is a slow burner, with an angst-driven hook and themes of infidelity, excesses, and love lost. Cashin and his band, The Lil Hussy's, hope it will become something of an anthem for America's masses. "I just got put onto 28,000 more listeners through a company in Florida," he says, explaining that already 40 per cent of his listeners live in America. "I could get a chance to sign a major deal there." At age 42, Cashin, of Blue Haven, is no newcomer to the business. He's performed in several bands over 28 years, including a long stint as the front man for the Australian Pearl Jam Show. So, he's seen many of the traps for young players.
