Golf course manager at Magenta Shores, Kenton Boyd, explains how to transform your patch into the green envy of the street. EXPERT INSIDER: Kenton Boyd, pictured on course at Magenta Shores, is a qualifi ed greenkeeper with diplomas in landscaping and (advanced) turf management. Pictures by Aaron Brown. ATER restrictions have eased for the fi rst time in years, so there’s never been a better time to get your lawn into peak condition. W Award-winning greenkeeper Kenton Boyd said that for yards with warm-season grasses – such as kikuyu, couch and buffalo – August is a good time to think about controlling annual weeds. September is the month for fertilizing. And aeration is recommended in October as the soil temperature rises. “Your aim should be to have a dense lawn with a healthy grass sward,” Kenton said. A dense lawn helps to prevent the growth of weeds. Kenton recommends hand weeding of small lawns, but said selective herbicides are needed for larger areas. “Always read the label to ensure that the chemicals can be used on the type of grass that you have – and buffalo is the most sensitive,” he said. A good place to start any lawn maintenance regime is to test the soil to identify any defi ciencies, he said. These tests can be carried out locally, and can measure such things as the soil’s pH levels, and the presence of essential lawn nutrients. Another potential lawn problem occurs in high traffi c areas. These areas can become compacted, requiring aeration. “You can core these areas [see coring machine above] with hollow tining, and then backfi ll them with a sandy loam and poultry fi nes,” Kenton said. “This stimulates micro-organism growth Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL Club Ltd. ourRSL Ourimbah’s Best Kept Secret Fantastic Facilities and Affordable Dining Famous …your family club Ourimbah Green All You Can Eat Buffet Lunch & Dinner 7 Days, Special Members Discount - RAFFLES FRIDAYS AND SUNDAYS - CHARITY CASH HOUSIE WEDNESDAYS - FABULOUS FREE ENTERTAINMENT FRIDAY & SATURDAY NIGHTS - TEXAS HOLD ‘EM POKER EVERY THURSDAY PRIVATE AND CORPORATE FUNCTION FACILITIES AVAILABLE Courtesy Members Rewards & Discounts Bus 6-22 Pacific Highway Ourimbah, NSW 2258 Ph: (02) 4362 1104 Fax: (02) 4362 1981 www.ourimbahrsl.com.au c8552597-6Aug and assists with moisture and nutrient retention. The coring creates a void for air and moisture to move freely through the soil profi le.” Coring is a routine part of golf course maintenance. And when it comes to fertilizing your lawn, a balanced fertilizer with a controlled-release nitrogen and potassium will promote regulated growth and stress tolerance while minimising negative impacts on the environment. A follow-up application can be made in March if needed, Kenton said. HOLLOW VICTORY: Steve Cook demonstrates how the hollow tines on the coring machine remove plugs of compacted soil. Core promise Coring machines are available for hire. The manager of Kennards Hire at West Gosford, Steve Cook, said it was common for groups of neighbours to share the hiring cost and then core their lawns over a weekend. The coring machine, which is slightly larger than a domestic lawnmower, is available from Kennards Hire for $85 for four hours. Daily rates start at $85 depending on the time of year.
