One man’s treasure Dave makes no apologies for being a collector of other people’s discards. Scrap metal, obsolete machinery and discarded timber are the building blocks of Dave’s one-man factory. “Australians have got to learn not to be shy about making things,” he reasons. “The Third World is doing it all the time with their waste and refuse. “Here in Australia we have the ‘luxury’ of throwing those things out. It’s the disposable world we live in.” The best teacher You won’t fi nd any trade certifi cates nor qualifi cations hanging in Dave’s work shed. There are none. “I’m self-taught,” he said. “I even taught myself how to read and write.” “The way I learned to make things was to take an interest in doing something, then I’d sidle up to someone who knew how to do it. ‘’I’ve found that people with knowledge will tell you the right way to do things.” LUNAR LANDING: The ‘lighthouse’ feature below the centre of the table was fashioned from a fi shing buoy, while the frame was made from the steel hoops of old rum vats.
