BY DAVID STEWART e t e r a x g. SLOW DOWN HONEY pop is not a dirty word C ENTRAL Coast band Slow Down Honey proudly calls it “dirty pop”. Elsewhere, others who seemingly can’t bring themselves to say the ‘P’ word will use terms such as ‘’electro’’ and ‘’indie/ alternative’’ to describe the band’s sound. But Slow Down Honey drummer Lachlan West, 20, is refreshingly frank about the band’s music and infl uences. “We’re not gonna change the world with our songs, but pop is what we listen to, and it’s what we love,” he said. “We’re big fans of classic songwriters like Carole King and Bob Dylan. So anywhere between that sort of pop, and the Michael Jackson sort of pop, is what we love.” Slow Down Honey is Alex Bennison (vocals), Tim John (bass), John Lamrock (guitar), and West (drums). In June, the band released its debut EP In The Picture, a slick little showcase of its rich melodies, catchy choruses, and busy instrumentation. And it’s a recipe that the boys have enjoyed testing on the road as part of their current east coast tour with fellow Central Coast band Something With Numbers, and Melbourne rockers The Galvatrons. “They’re great guys and I love playing with them,” West said. “But I love the after-parties even more.” The drummer is bound to be in his element then when Slow Down Honey completes its tour with a performance at the Coaster 09 festival at Gosford Showground on September 12. Sharing an outdoor stage with the likes of Eskimo Joe, Bliss N Eso and Van She will present a challenge that West said the band would soak up. “At a festival like that, everyone’s there to have a big party and they’re in a festival mood,” he said. It’ll be a far cry from those gigs that every band has played at some time at a small pub where the audience of 10 blokes is intent on drinking beer and watching the football, he said.
