Coasting : Issue 3 2009
IDEO clips featuring local band Short Stack have been viewed more than 4 million times on My Space alone – and that’s all before their debut album is released. V Short Stack front man Shaun Diviney, 20, admits that the band initially turned to the internet through necessity, and with a modest goal. “When we started out a few years ago we were too young to play gigs in clubs and pubs so we thought we’d get ourselves onto the internet,” Diviney said. Those fi rst tentative keystrokes online were to advertise Short Stack’s debut local gigs “for about 25 kids”. Three years on and the band are now certifi ed cyberspace heavyweights. There’s the Short Stack website and online TV show, Short Stack TV, and You Tube and My Space postings of slick video clips of the singles including Sway Sway Baby, Drop Dead Gorgeous and the standout Princess. Jump online and see how the Short Stack numbers stack up. ■ The video clip for the single Princess has been played more that 1.3 million times on My Space alone; ■ The clip for Shimmy A Go Go has been played 982,000 times on My Space; ■ Episode 1 of Short Stack TV, which shows self-fi lmed episodes of the band mostly mucking around, has had more than 44,000 views on You Tube; and g ■ Episode 10 picked up more than 5000 views on the fi rst day it was shown, and was the most watched You Tube music video that day. And all from a band whose debut album Stack Is The New Black hasn’t been released yet (it’s due to hit the streets on August 14). So what is the big attraction of Short Stack for the internet generation? First and foremost, these guys can play. Their energetic music blends elements of punk, glam and indie. And the charismatic Diviney can write a hook. But young fans also recognise that Diviney (guitar and lead vocals), Andy Clemmensen, 21 (bass and vocals), and Bradie Webb, 20 (drums and keyboards), have a laddish sense of humour that can lead them into dangerous waters. Take the band’s distinctive styling – a look which evidently entrances many young female fans, but drives some male bloggers to sling sexual insults. Diviney laughs at the online barbs. “We just deal with that sort of criticism in a humorous way,” he said laughing, before assuring Coasting that the band was totally into girls. Like totally. “Our image is 100 per cent ourselves,” he adds, and not a construct of the band’s record company or management. Then there are the fi lm clips featuring lingerie models and pillow fi ghts, bedroom scenes with rabbits, and a random cut-away shot to a toy monkey. And the lyrics: In Sway Sway Baby, for instance, Diviney sings “Kill your boyfriend, we could be together.” Even Drop Dead Gorgeous isn’t the love song that you might have assumed from the song’s title. Diviney instead sings ‘‘Hope you drop dead, gorgeous”. And all the while the young showman pouts and fl irts down the lens, even slipping in a phrase or two in an American accent. Diviney said his parents “played great music” when he was a child. Songs by Queen, Joy Division and The Cure were among Diviney’s favourites then, and the infl uences of those bands shine through in his performances now. He does the tongue-incheek thing well, and you have to wonder if some of those hostile male bloggers have missed the joke. But Diviney fully understands that the jokes and online hype stretch only so far. Being able to write and play good songs is still ultimately what matters most if Short Stack are to achieve the sort of world domination that magazines such as TV Hits have predicted. “A lot of bands have been considered big on the internet but haven’t been able to back it up. But I really think we can back it up,” Diviney said without a hint of cockiness. PROFILE: Performances on mainstream television shows such as Sunrise and Rove, as well as several music video programs, have helped to spread the Short Stack word on the eve of the release this month of their debut album Stack Is The New Black.
