12 In tHe MOvIES By DAVID STEWART Occupation: Cinema technician (formerly known as chief projectionist) Name: Justin McCulloch Age: 33 What does the job involve? Overseeing the presentation of feature films at Greater Union Cinemas, Tuggerah, and the on- going maintenance of the 35mm projectors and associated equipment. What first attracted you to the job? I’ve always been an avid movie goer. As a youngster the idea of working at a cinema very much appealed to me as it seemed kinda’ cool. After landing a job as an usher I quickly turned my hand to the technical aspects of the projection room. What training/preparation is required? Most of the skills required can be learnt on the job. Technical manuals and online forums also Pic: Aaron Brown provide an alternative source of training and information. An eye for detail and the ability to stay calm under fire are skills that are valued in the projection room. Inevitably a component may fail through no fault of your own and it will always be at the worst possible time, as dictated by Murphy’s Law. Best part of the gig? Without a doubt screening a first-run preview of a highly anticipated film to a full house and knowing that the onscreen presentation for the audience concerned is as good as it can be. The staff- privileged movie tickets and discounted Rydges Hotel and Resort accommodation are also nice perks. Worst part of the gig? Definately the solitude that accompanies Ask a local Your local Tuggerah office manager Faye, has lived on the Coast all her life and has been with us for 8 years, working at our Wyoming, Lakehaven, Morisset and Tuggerah branches.
